Sprained Ankle
  • XMAbegginerXMAbegginer December 2010
So I sprained my ankle and it does not seem to be getting better. I am trying to be patient but it has been almost 8 weeks now and I can hardly run or jump which rules out practicing any kind of tricks. and forms training is hard because that fast spins and hip changes make my ankle feel weak. It is driving me nuts especially with the 2011 competition season fast approaching. Anyone have any tips on getting better faster or some modified training that I can do in the mean time?

I just did this myself! It wasn't fun at all! That didn't stop me from training though. My instructor had to tell me to rest my ankle on off days. My suggestion is wear a brace. I am and it is working out well! If you already are wearing a brace concentrate on your traditional for a while until your ankle heals. Hoped this help.

Hey XMAbeginner and blackbelt22, I have sprained my ankle at least twice a year since I was eight and I am now 16. If it isn't getting better, especially after that long of time, go to the doctor, you may of broken or torn a tendon or something. They may send you to physical therapy to give you some strengthening exercises for your ankle.
Go on crutches when you first sprain your ankle for a week, with icing every hour for 30 minutes. After 48-72 hours start rotating heat, and ice to repair muscles. You shouldn't be trying to jump or anything until you can walk and run without a limp or it hurting. If you push yourself you will cause long lasting damage. I have had surgery on my ankle in 2009, because I chipped bones in my ankle. I came back a little too soon and so my ankle still hurts when I trick or walk for too long. So take your time coming back to training your forms and tricks, but keep up with doing strength conditioning activities. While your at home resting your ankle do some ab work, and arm work. This will keep you in shape since you won't doing your normal martial arts training.

    Goodluck :)
