practice, practice and more practice! i'm no pro, but i taught myself how to do this with lots of practice, i started with finding the center of balance of my kama (with the blade facing to the floor) with a finger, then while keeping my finger near/on that mark, turn it so the blade is horizontal (or parralell with the floor), then put your thumb on the line of the center of balance, that is where you'll spin it. then i kept my thumb on that place then with my other four fingers i spun the kama horizontally, from there i just kept on practicing.
i hope this helps, i'm not the best at explaining :)
It is also easier for me when I use kamas that have flatter sides. It is very hard to describe how to do this. Experiment as the above poster suggested because people do this different ways and what works for you may be totally different.
This is totally up my alley!! Basicly you want to find the balance point of the kama. When you rotate the kama, make sure your thumb is always on the balance point. Don't keep your thumb steady, but rotate it in a small circular motion with the kama =D other than that, keep practicing.
TYLER WEAVER!! no way! dude, you're my favorite martial artsit ever! your 2007 IKSA blindfolded kama form was almost soley the reason why i started extreme karate!! i have a bunch of your videos on my ipod and rarely a day goes by that i don't watch them! at school, when people look over and see what im watching they're like "what the hek? that's insane!!"... the first time i saw a thumb roll was in your blindfolded kama form! i thought it was sooo awesome, i saved up and bought some extreme kama, and began to practice, at first i thought you had to have balanced kama for the thumb roll, but after alot of work (and scrapes :S ), i got it! tyler can i ask you 2 questions? are your kama balanced and/or sharp? and do you ever sit still? i mean if i could do half te thing you could do, i don't think i could ever sit down :D
Tyler is awesome but so is Mackensi! I agree your blindfolded kama form was amazing. Oh and I liked your new xma form and kama form at New England Open! It was sweet! =] Can't wait to see you perform live at AKA Grands! Keep training hard core dude! =]
