As I write this note, I feel that there is a lot of misconception about Tricking and what its true meaning really is to the people who do it, I will share my views on it and will speak my mind clearly on what it means to me.
For starters, I think that my friend Emerson Doyle made a pretty good point on his note by saying that some of us wish that it wasn't called "tricking", but in a huge sense it is way too late for us to change that now. It has been "tricking" for so long now that for that to change,it will take just as long. I enjoy what we do day after day, whatever people's views on the name is really irrelevant, it wont change the feeling that I get when I get to throw tricks with my friends.
Secondly, I feel that what we do is literally the best hobby anyone could have. I've done every hobby out there, from the car scene to acting and modeling to competing in national tournaments............ you name it, I've done it! I have to honestly say that the thing that I love the most about tricking over all these things is the feeling of having a second family. Some examples you may ask of why the others I mentioned earlier aren't...... here you go; in the car scene if you don't have the hot car, people are always looking down on you. The guy next to you is always trying to out do you and trying to buy the hottest and newest car parts just to keep up or to try to show off more than the others. In acting and modeling, you have to spend so much time trying to look better than everyone else, everyone is for themselves and you can't expect any help from anyone cause you won't get it. In national tournaments, it is your job to keep practicing because the guy that you beat last time is going to try to beat you even worse than he beat you before! So all and all, basically you're either at the top or you're nothing.
I believe that tricking will evolve into a major sport in the future, in a sense, it already is. We see it all the time and the only people who recognize it is us, TRICKERS! I love it when people ask me if I know how to trick, ofcourse I say "yes" and I'm very proud to say that because I take great pride in what my community has been trying to build for so many years now. I remember my first tricking video was the one where Steve Terada and Anthony Atkins were in Australia and they were doing trick after trick and I saw Steve doing a pop 1080......... I was hooked on it after that.
Our sport has come such a long way after that. You have people now who literally defy the forces of gravity and who are pushing the limits of the human body. I'm very proud to know so many great trickers and to have such a great bond between all of the trickers from the DMV area, not to mention trickers from literally all over the world.
My view on tricking is simple and short, we love what we do because it liberates us from our normal routine, it frees our minds and bodies, it shows us that we can do anything we want as long as we set our minds to it, that we don't all have to see each other every day in order for us to be great friends and that the bond in our community is stronger than that of any other. I share this view with all of you to show our sport is evolving and that in a short period of time, the world will know of what we do and that future generations will be looking at us for guidance. Lets be ready for what is to come our way and that if you're not proud of what you do now, you will literally kick yourself later down the road.
I thank all of you for reading this and may I remind you that I didn't type this to change anyone's mind, but only to speak my own.
Wow, that was really beautiful! Can't add anything to that. Makes me wish I live closer to be able to trick with groups of people on a regular basis instead of alone. Well said Felix!
Very well put, Felix! Thanks so much for taking the time to write down your thoughts. This is exactly why this forum exists. It's guys like you who make tricking the awesome lifestyle that it is. Thanks!
Very cool...! P.S. If you guys have another term other than tricking you'd prefer be used... What is it!? I admire all of you and your sport/sportsmanship so whatever you want it to be called, that's what I will call it!:-)
This is awesome! totally wanted me to go out and trick as soon as I was done reading it! It makes me want to push myself to trick even harder! Thanks for the awesome note! :)
