Danny Etkin is a fun kid to be around but when he steps into the ring he is all about winning. With over 200  first place wins, 40 world titles and 75 grand champion awards you would think he was competing before he could walk. Danny’s mix of hip hop style, incredible chuck releases and powerful trick combos keeps him at the top and always exciting to watch.

Danny started martial arts at 4years old after watching a commercial on TV. He thought the kicks and nunchucks looked cool, so he went for it. He has not stopped training since. What makes Danny special is his drive to do things never done before. He has set records for being the youngest athlete to do many tricks and high level martial arts techniques. As Danny says, “why be average when you can be a legend?”

Over the past 15 years, tricking has evolved from an Internet phenomenon, stemming from martial arts, to a competitive sport with new styles and harder moves that are pushing the limits in the tricking world, and redefining the possibilities of human movement as we know it.

HELIO GRACIE // OCT 1ST, 1913 – JAN 29TH, 2009

Helio Gracie, the youngest son of Gastão and Cesalina Gracie’s eight children, was always a very physically frail child. He would run up a flight of stairs and have fainting spells, and no one could figure out why.

At age fourteen, he moved in with his older brothers who lived and taught Jiu-Jitsu in a house in Botafogo, a borough of Rio de Janeiro. Following doctor’s recommendations, Helio would spend the next few years limited to only watching his brothers teach.

One day, when Helio was 16 years old, a student showed up for class when Carlos was not around. Helio, who had memorized all the techniques from watching his brothers teach, offered to start the class. When the class was over, Carlos showed up and apologized for his delay. The student answered, “No problem. I enjoyed the class with Helio very much and, if you don’t mind, I’d like to continue learning from him.” Carlos agreed, and Helio became an instructor.

Helio soon realized that due to his frail physique, most of the techniques he had learned from watching Carlos teach were particularly difficult for him to execute. Eager to make the techniques work for him, he began modifying them to accommodate his weak body. Emphasizing the use of leverage and timing over strength and speed, Helio modified virtually all of the techniques and, through trial and error, created Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In order to prove the effectiveness of his new system, Helio openly challenged all the reputable martial artists in Brazil. He fought 18 times, including matches against onetime world heavyweight wrestling champion, Wladek Zbyszko and the #2-ranked Judoka in the world at the time, Kato, whom Helio choked unconscious in six minutes. His victory against Kato qualified him to enter the ring with the world champion, Masahiko Kimura, the best Jiu-Jitsu fighter Japan has ever produced, and who outweighed Helio by almost 80 pounds. Kimura won the match but was so impressed with Helio’s techniques that he asked Helio to go teach in Japan claiming the techniques Helio presented during their bout did not exist in Japan. It was the recognition by the world’s best to Helio’s dedication to the refinement of the art.

At 43 years old, Helio and former student, Waldemar Santana, set the world record for the longest uninterrupted no-holds-barred fight in history when they fought for an incredible 3 hours and 40 minutes!

Widely regarded as the first sports hero in Brazilian history, Helio also challenged boxing icons Primo Carnera, Joe Louis, and Ezzard Charles. They all declined.

A dedicated family man who exemplified a healthy life-style he was the epitome of courage, discipline, determination, and an inspiration to people everywhere. A modern-day legend, Helio Gracie gained international acclaim for his dedication to the dissemination of the art and is recognized as the creator of Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

We caught up with Kung Fu Athlete Mark Poletti to see what he’s been up to lately and check out the release of ‘Out of the Maw’ an indie sci-fantasy short film inspired by Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Name: Mark Poletti
Age: 25
Home Town: Kennet Square, PA
Current City: Costa Mesa, CA

Mark: I moved out to California back in 2011 to pursue my Martial Arts Training. It’s funny how it actually helped me discover acting and stunts. My roommate Dy Sao asked me to help him practice lines for a project he was working on and I that’s where it all started. I really enjoyed it and I guess I caught the ‘acting bug’ and found that it was something I wanted to try and pursue more of.

Hyper: So what was your next step?

Mark: The first step I took was stunts. I started training a lot more and adding in film fighting and falls to my training. While doing a lot of youtube/indie project with stunts, I was practicing acting on the side. I couldn’t really afford classes or the drive to LA, so we just got a small group together and began acting scenes we loved from movies.

Hyper: It seems like that is a lot more common these days. Now with so many creative people out there and access to cameras and youtube people that are passionate about something can easily get together with a group of like minded people create project without the ‘traditional barriers’ that were in place in the past.

Mark: Exactly! It’s just now up to all of us to step the game up, get the quality up there. Not just effects but stories, sets and a bigger view of things. Anyone can create and share stories that otherwise would never had made. There is a way different audience on YouTube then the movie scene and it allows fans to create alternative story lines and projects inspired by theatrical releases.

Hyper: As part of the Kung Fu Heroes team you have had the opportunity to travel all over the world. Last year you traveled to China to train, what was that like?

Mark: China was amazing! We trained 8 to 9 hours a day for six days straight! For me the best part was seeing just an insane amount of people practicing Kung fu. The school we first trained at had around 5000 people training. But when we went to Tagou – well its a school of 60,000+ they essentially have their own city! We got to see a demo of a few thousand people doing a choreographed routine and it was just insane. It really opened my eyes to the bigger picture of Martial Arts in the world and especially the cultural roots of it.
